Psalms 91:5 is often used by intercessors to pray for those in distress or for those headed into ministry assignments that may be fraught with dangers. Those situations are well suited for these key scriptures and I believe they are part of the effectual fervent prayer that does avail much! Yet there is more to this passage than just a prayer covering or a deliverance decree.
Psalm 91:1-5 1He that dwells in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. 3Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. 4He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings will you trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. You will not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flies by day.
This speaks to the abundant love and overtaking power of God’s presence to those who belong to him. Those who dwell (abide in, live in) with him by divine relationship have an assured promise that he will cover us; deliver us from the darkness of this world. He himself is a place to run to, to inhabit and rest in. We can trust him to shield us and that fear is abolished as task master. Because of the sacrifice of God’s son, Jesus gave up his sinless life for us; he was crucified in our place of sin. He gave himself to the world that we might come out of darkness into his light. If we receive him as our savior and king, we are translated into God.
We have become heirs to all that God has and joint heirs with Christ. Everything the Father in heaven had for his son is now ours. By the blood of Jesus and the resurrection from the dead Jesus purchased freedom from satan and his dark ways.
So fear of the night, terror of the world, torment of death and lack of hope are abolished because of Jesus. This incredible Psalm describes our relationship to God as intimate, caring and overtaking with grace and power. Dwelling in him by our relationship with him places us in the secret place. We now live under his wings and the almighty of heaven is our shield.
That is such good news! This doesn’t mean we will never have troubles, problems or tragedy. What it does mean is that because we have given ourselves to Christ completely God then gives his children cover, grace, protection and beauty.
Receive today the truth! God sent his son for you to come out of fear and darkness, you can be assured, trust and rely on that he will never leave you nor forsake you. Come and find his love and presence today.
